Rounding to the Nearest 1000 and Estimating

Learn to round four-digit numbers to the nearest 1000 using the hundreds digit, then use rounded numbers to estimate sums quickly. Explore when a rough estimate is good enough in real shopping situations.

    Your turn
Your teacher is running this lesson on the board. Here is the part you can try yourself.
    Number line
    Number line

    1 - Getting Started ~4 mins

Illustration for Getting StartedHere is a sum: 4,200 + 2,900. Roughly how much do you think that is altogether? Not the exact answer, just a good guess in your head. Would it be nearer to 6,000, 7,000, or 8,000?

    2 - Watch and Notice ~11 mins

The number line shows a marker between two thousands. Look where the marker sits and decide which thousand it is nearer. The last one has no line, so we round in our heads instead.

    3 - Try It Together ~7 mins

Today we work through these numbers together on the line, rounding each to the nearest thousand: 2,300 → 5,500 → 8,900 → 4,050. The 5,500 lands exactly on a middle mark, so we will use our halfway rule and say each one aloud before we check.

    Round to the nearest thousand

4 - Round and Estimate in Your Copy ~4 mins

    COPYBOOK MOMENT

In your maths copy, round each of these three numbers to the nearest 1000, writing the two thousands it sits between beside it before you choose:

    • 2,850
    • 3,150
    • 6,400

Then use your rounded numbers to estimate one addition: about how much is 2,850 + 3,150?

    5 - Class Challenge ~8 mins

Today's challenge bank builds up: round 2,400, then 5,500, then 8,900, and finally estimate 4,100 + 3,850 by rounding each number first. The last one puts rounding and adding together.
